7th Annual Turkey Tourney Pro-Am and Junior Tournament

On Sunday Nov 22rd, Woods Tennis Center will be hosting the 7th Annual Friends of Woods Tennis (FOWT) Turkey Tourney Pro-Am. The event is FOWT’s largest fundraiser of the year and money raised goes towards city-wide junior programs, providing new racquets to first time players, and to make scholarships available for low-income families to take advantage of the programming at Woods.

About the Program

For the last eight summers, Woods Tennis Center has partnered with the Lincoln City Parks and Recreation Department and other non-profit community centers – such as Malone Center, the Salvation Army and Boys and Girls Club – to provide low-cost, high quality tennis instruction to children who might not otherwise have access to tennis lessons. Our Taking the Game to the Community project introduces low-income and minority kids to tennis in their neighborhood parks and schools. Since the program began in 2008,  Woods has given out more than 3,300 free racquets to first-time adult and junior players across Lincoln. For players who are dedicated to improving their tennis skills, Woods offers low income scholarship opportunities for group and private lessons.

The Pro-Am Tournament
The Pro-Am event features local pros from many clubs, elite local players and high school coaches, who will team up with a junior player. Play consists of a 10 point round-robin matches, so there is always plenty of action going on in both bubbles. Play will finish around 4pm once every doubles team has participated in a playoff for final positions. There will be a free Thanksgiving dinner after the tournament has included.

Silent Auction
During the weeks leading up to the tournament Woods hosts a silent auction. Items will be on display in Woods from mid-November onwards, so feel free to drop in, check out the items and get a number for the auction. The auction closes on Sunday Nov 22,  just before we start the final Pro-AM matches. Items from last year included a one week stay at a condo in Vail and one week condo stay on Coronado Island, San Diego, beer for a year from Empyrean brewery, vouchers for local restaurants, designer sunglasses, seasonal baskets, jewelry, tennis racquets and bags, and Woods Family Passes and private lessons.

Junior Turkey Tourney
As a part of the week Woods will also be hosting a Junior Turkey Tourney on November 23-25. There will be no regular group lessons during the Thanksgiving week, but all players from the Beginner through to the Grand Slam group will be encouraged to enter the tournament. The tournament is only open to players that have been involved in regular lessons at Woods in the past year. Entry forms will be made available online as the tournament date approaches.
